    1926

    La Valencia first opened on December 15, 1926, as an apartment hotel. Originally called Los Apartmentos de Sevilla, the name was rarely used, but the property quickly became known for its distinctive Spanish-inspired design. Architect Reginald Johnson, a respected local figure admired for his understanding of classic Spanish architecture, created the hotel to reflect the finest elements of the Spanish architectural tradition.

    1930s

    The property was officially renamed La Valencia in 1928. As the Great Depression deepened in the late 1920s and early 1930s, the hotel faced challenging years. In 1930, McArthur appointed Gethin Williams as General Manager, making him the second of only seven General Managers in La Valencia’s 90-year history to date, including MacArthur Gorton himself.

    1940s

    During World War II, La Valencia played a meaningful role in the local war effort due to La Jolla’s close proximity to San Diego. Residents kept watch from the hotel’s windswept tower, scanning the skies and ocean for enemy aircraft or ships. The hotel also became a temporary home for hundreds of young officers, many of whom gathered in the lobby while waiting for deployment or enjoying leave.

    1950s

    In 1950, La Valencia added its now-iconic ocean-view pool. The hotel’s gym, sauna, putting green, and shuffleboard court were introduced soon after, further enhancing the guest experience.

Celebrate the glamorous spirit of the Roaring Twenties at La Valencia Hotel's new 1926 Social Club, debuting on the Med Patio every Thursday from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. Gather along Prospect Street for an evening of live jazz, spirited conversation, and 1920s-inspired cocktails, all set against the timeless backdrop of The Pink Lady.

Inspired by the golden age of La Jolla nightlife, the weekly series brings jazz back to Prospect Street with a rotating lineup of San Diego's top jazz performers. 

Guests can also enjoy a special $100 menu for two, featuring a curated three-course dinner designed for lingering summer evenings under the palms.

Seating is first come, first served on the Med Patio.
