History

La Valencia first opened on December 15, 1926, as an apartment hotel. Originally called Los Apartmentos de Sevilla, the name was rarely used, but the property quickly became known for its striking Spanish-inspired design. Architect Reginald Johnson, a respected local figure admired for his integrity and deep knowledge of classic Spanish architecture, designed the hotel to blend the finest elements of the Spanish architectural tradition. Owners MacArthur Gorton and Roy built La Valencia for approximately $200,000.

The property was officially named La Valencia in 1928. As the Great Depression deepened in the late 1920s and early 1930s, the hotel faced difficult years. In 1930, McArthur hired Gethin Williams as General Manager, making him the second of only seven General Managers in La Valencia’s 90-year history to date, including MacArthur Gorton himself.

During World War II, La Valencia and its guests became closely connected to the war effort due to La Jolla’s proximity to San Diego. Local residents kept watch from the hotel’s windswept tower, scanning the skies and ocean for enemy aircraft or ships. The hotel also served as a temporary home for hundreds of young officers, who often gathered in the lobby while waiting to ship out or enjoying leave. Young brides also stayed at the hotel or in nearby cottages, waiting for their husbands during wartime.

La Valencia’s iconic ocean-view pool was added in 1950. Soon after, the hotel introduced its gym, sauna, putting green, and shuffleboard court, expanding the resort-style amenities that guests continue to enjoy.
