Best known for her beehive-wearing stint with blues diva Candye Kane inthe ’90′s, Sue Palmer has been making her mark in the last decade with herhigh energy band, the Motel Swing Orchestra, and her flashy boogie woogie stylings. Wearing a couple of pounds of big cocktail rings on each hand, shewails through a very complete blues keyboard vocabulary like the veteran sheis. She has performed with many of the legends of the boogie genre. Sue, known widely as San Diego’s Queen of Boogie Woogie, has been honored by hercity for her cultural contributions by having a day named after her (March 25th,2008), played at the Arches Piano Stage in Cinncinnatti (2008), won the International Blues Challenge in Memphis for Best Self Produced CD 2008(“Sophisticated Ladies”) from the Blues Foundation, won numerous SanDiego Music Awards for her albums and bands, including Best Blues Album 2010 for her first solo piano album “After Hours,” and in December2010, won the “Jim Croce Award for Excellence and Dedication toMusic, 2010,” from his widow, Ingrid Croce. Sue will be featured with her dynamic trio at the Beautiful La Valencia Hotel, featuring Deejha Marie on vocals.
Audiences have characterized Jonathan as a great interpreter of song, a storyteller, a singer who brings music and lyric alive. Some refer to Jonathan as an amazing song-stylist who sings from the American songbook, an entertainer of star quality. Others say he paints a picture, he presents a mood and captivates a room through song. Jazz Corner said “Karrant’s voice is romantic without being cloying, warm but not forced” and “that he sings standards with an emotional weight that make it seem as if he had written the songs himself”. He will tell you that he has an innate connection with music writers of the past, masters like Cole Porter (they share the same birthday), George Gershwin, Sammie Cahn, Julie Styne, Johnny Mercer, to mention a few. He will tell you that he has great respect for such giants as Tony Bennett, Frank Sinatra, Sarah Vaughan, Etta James, Little Jimmy Scott, Nancy Wilson, Johnny Hartman. He will tell you that he loves people, loves connecting with other musicians and with his audience, and loves sharing time with those who also love to celebrate life and music.Jonathan’s recent album “On and On” made it to number four in the All About Jazz charts. The album features such songs as “Don’t Let Me Be Lonely Tonight” and “Doodlin’”, as well as the title track, and was produced by Tyler Monks, with pianist Josh Nelson, bassist Rob Thorsen, guitarist Mark Shapiro, and drummer Duncan Moore.
As a versatile musician, Chris enjoys jazz, pop, classical, popular movie scores & bluegrass music. Although piano is his main instrument, he also plays mandolin, banduria, Okinawan sanshin, upright bass, ukulele, electric guitar & vibraphone. Chris has performed numerous solo concerts in Hawaii, California, New York, Michigan and Chicago. Overall, he recorded 12 albums, ten of which are solo with several original compositions & two bluegrass albums with “Lonesome Otis Bluegrass Band”. He travels with Lonesome Otis at Bluegrass festivals throughout Arizona, Nevada and all over California. In 2011, he established his own band called “The Chris Cerna Trio” that he recently brought to New York at one of his concert performance last December. Locally, he plays regularly in a swing band with “Keith Ward & The Blackwood Jazz Combo” where he shares his talents on keyboard, vibraphone, mandolin & jazz guitar.
Whitney finds inspiration in a large range of music from the blues and jazz of Bessie Smith & Billie Holiday in the ’20s and ’30s, to the R&B and Soul of Etta James & Sam Cooke in the 50s and 60s; and her musical performances reflect this variety. Whitney Shay is a hard working and versatile performer, and you can find her singing with anything from a jazz duo to quartet, belting out some high energy swingin’ blues and R&B alongside San Diego legends like Robin Henkel, fronting a 13 piece Big Band (“The JazzKatz Project”), or working in various configurations with some of the most talented musicians in town! Whitney Shay recently released her debut album Soul Tonic produced by Archie Thompson; featuring guest performances by Mike Thompson (Rod Stewart, The Eagles), acclaimed jazz flautist Holly Hofmann, Mitch Manker (Ray Charles Orchestra), and international blues guitarist Nathan James.
Pat Dowling grew up in Fairfield, Connecticut. I grew up playing piano, drums, and eventually guitar. The Red Hot Chili Peppers, Jack Johnson, and Ben Harper are some of my favorite musicians. My music style is acoustic pop rock with smooth vocals. I also like to beat box on some songs to add a new dimension to the music. When Pat isn’t performing, he enjoys coaching lacrosse, traveling, and surfing.
Malamaña is the the combination of the musical flavors and talents of San Diego guitarists John “Juanito” Tidwell and Fred “Fredi” Kunze ), who have played together as a guitar duo since the year 2000. Over the years MalaMaña has worked as a duo, trio and quintet as they have brought their unique form of latin music with sizzling guitars and passionate vocals in Spanish. Their new CD, the self-titled MalaMaña, was recorded, mixed and produced by San Diego musical luminary Allan Phillips, a native of Venezuela. Allan brought his amazing musical talent and knowledge to the CD project to make it something truly special. MalaMaña is proud to call San Diego its home and Cafe Sevilla its headquarters. The band has played at many local events including opening for Poncho Sanchez and Enanitos Verdes. Malamaña’s music draws from many styles- rumba, rock, jazz, salsa, blues and flamenco. The MalaMaña sound was developed and born amid the fun and musical freedom of the tapas bar at Cafe Sevilla in San Diego. ¡Qué bárbaro!
